These plugs will pop out of the sump pump if water is trapped inside, preventing structural damage to the pump. You can remove the freeze plug on a sump pump for repair or replacement, if necessary. 1
Drain the sump well, if servicing a submersible sump pump. Turn on the pump and allow the water inside the well to be pumped out. If the pump is not operational, bail out the water with a bucket or similar container.
-
2
Turn off the electricity for the pump by turning off the switch or cutting the power at the main circuit breaker. Place a piece of electrical tape across the switch to prevent it from accidentally being turned on while you are working.

3
Locate the freeze plug(s) on the body of the sump pump. These will look like circular indentions along the side of the pump.
-
4
Clean off the outside of the freeze plug with a degreaser and a rag. This will allow the screwdriver to get a better grip.
-
5
Place the edge of a flat bladed screwdriver against the freeze plug.
-
6
Tap the screwdriver with a mallet until the freeze plug pops out of place.
