How to Get a Job As a Climatologist

How to Get a Job As a Climatologist thumbnail
Climatologists study long-range seasonal atmospheric data to forecast changes in climate.

Climatologists collect and analyze location-specific seasonal data over extended periods to predict future climate and weather patterns. Working in fields like agriculture and engineering, climatologists can use climate to plan crop cycles and work with materials to construct a building or road. Their efforts can not only reveal the impact that natural events and human behaviors have on atmospheric patterns but also help industry and government leaders develop mitigation efforts. Most climatologists work for the government, although opportunities also exist in private industry.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll in a relevant degree program. Not many schools offer atmospheric science majors. If you do not enroll in a school that offers atmospheric science as a major, meet with an adviser regarding the availability of courses, such as climatology, hydrology, physics and meteorology.

    • 2

Take courses in advanced mathematics and research methods that can help you develop your research and forecasting skills.

    • 3

Research on-campus employment opportunities to work on climatology projects or seek experience in a laboratory. This builds your resume with practical research experience and provides the opportunity to enhance your learning.

    • 4

Apply to participate in relevant internship and fellowship opportunities. Agencies, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), host student opportunities sites.

    • 5

Create a curriculum vitae that details your student work and internship or fellowship experience.

    • 6

Apply for available climatologist positions. In addition to NOAA and UCAR, many science industry organizations like the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Journal Science host career assistance and job board sites.
