How to Design Mardi Gras Shoes
Mardi Gras is a colorful, quirky New Orleans celebration that occurs the day before Ash Wednesday. People who attend Mardi Gras events usually dress in the colors associated with Mardi Gras--purple, green and yellow--and adorn themselves with colorful beads, feathers and sequins to show off their fun style.
Some of the more creative Mardi Gras attendees design and create their own clothes and accessories to wear to the celebration. Designing your own Mardi Gras-inspired shoes is a great way to show off your creative side and Mardi Gras spirit.

1
Decide what kind of shoes you want to turn into Mardi Gras shoes. If you plan on painting them, canvas shoes work best. If you plan on gluing embellishments to your shoes, make sure they are made from a material that craft or fabric glue will adhere to. Cloth or plastic shoes will be easier to work with than leather shoes.

2
Draw the shape of the shoe you want to design on a piece of paper.

3
Determine what you want to put on the shoe. Colors associated with Mardi Gras are green, purple and yellow. Use embellishments, such as beads, feathers and sequins, in those colors to give your shoes a Mardi Gras look.

Experiment with the embellishments you want to put on your shoe by trying out placement and design onto the drawing of the shoe. You can also lay different embellishments onto the shoe itself to see how they might look in various spots. You can paint the shoes to look like Mardi Gras masks, or cover the entire shoe in purple, green and yellow sequins.

5
Incorporate some of the common images associated with Mardi Gras into your shoe by gluing strands of Mardi Gras beads or multicolored feathers to the shoe.
