How to Tell If a Contact in Skype Is Invisible?

As is the case with most other instant messaging clients, web-based messenger and calling solution Skype displays a list of each user's contacts, permitting one-click communication between a user and his friends. Skype likewise permits users to be online -- but appear offline -- a status known as "invisible." If you believe one of your contacts is invisible, attempt to confirm or deny your suspicion.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Skype. Enter your Skype name and password in the designated fields and click the "Sign In" button. Wait for your contact list to appear.

    • 2

Scroll down through your list of contacts until you come upon the individual you suspect is invisible. Double-click his name.

    • 3

Type a message in the field at the bottom of the contact's window to attempt contacting him via chat. Alternatively, click either the "Call" or "Call With Video" buttons to attempt a voice or video call.

    • 4

Wait one or two minutes to see if the contact responds to your chat. Wait for the contact to answer your voice or video call. If he responds to you or answers your call in spite of appearing as offline, he is invisible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid sending multiple messages to a contact who appears offline, invisible or otherwise. If he doesn't return your first chat message -- or answer your call -- he is either offline or busy. If he's offline, he sees the messages you sent the next time he logs in and may feel annoyed by multiple messages.
