How to Get the Volume Icon Back on Vista
On the Vista operating system, the volume icon is displayed in the notifications area of the taskbar. The notification area is located on the right side of the taskbar. You can click the volume icon to gain access to the system volume and also to control the volume of media player applications. If the volume icon is no longer appearing in the notification area, you can restore it by accessing the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window.

Right-click on an empty area on the taskbar. Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu. The Taskbar and Start Menu's Properties window opens.

Click the "Notification Area" tab.

Click the "Volume" check box in the System Icons section.

Click "Apply," and then "OK." The volume icon appears in the notification area of the taskbar.
