How to Get Rid of the Joomla! Footer

Joomla! is a free open-source content management system, or CMS, similar to other CMS platforms such as Drupal and WordPress. With the right add-ons or extensions, use Joomla! as an article-based site for things such as local and world news, as a photo gallery, a way to sell a product or even as a blog. However, when using Joomla! for the first time, all new users will see are a series of content areas or modules unless they've purchased or downloaded a template outside of the default ones. Users can remove these modules to their liking, including the footer area.

Instructions

    • 1

Log into your Web host if you host your own Joomla! website, and then into Joomla! using your username and password. Notice that after you log in, you're taken immediately to the back end, or administration area of your Joomla! website.

    • 2

Scroll over the "Extensions" menu at the top of the screen and click on the "Module Manager" link in the drop-down menu if you're on any page outside of the "Administration" panel. Click on the "Module Manager" icon in your "Administration" panel if you're on the main "Administration" page. This will send you to the "Module Manager" page.

    • 3

Scroll down the list of "Modules" until you see one that says "Footer." Check off the box to the left of the "Footer" link and then click on the "Unpublish" icon at the top of the screen that looks like a red circle.

Save your changes and check the Joomla! site. Notice that the "footer" is no longer visible on the main site. Make it visible again by going into the "Module Manager," checking off the box beside the "Footer" link and clicking on the "Publish" icon at the top of the screen that looks like a green circle with a check mark in it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make changes or personalize the "Footer" by going into the "Module Manager" and clicking on the "Footer" link. Make the changes on the following page such as "Publish" or "Unpublish" from the drop-down menu, its position and menu assignment. Customize colors and fonts by editing the "Index.php" and "Footer.php" files. Back up the Joomla! website before making any changes to these files, in case you want to reverse the changes later on.

  • Don't remove the "Footer" by throwing it in the trash, as you may need it in the future. Hide the "Footer" or "Unpublish" it by following the steps above. The "Footer" won't be visible by visitors to your site.
