How to Block the Facebook Chat Bar

You can instant message your Facebook contacts through Facebook chat, which shows you which of your friends are currently online and also lets them know when you're online. While you can go offline in Facebook chat, the chat bar will still appear at the bottom of every Facebook page. If you use the Firefox or Chrome Internet browser, you can install an extension that will remove the chat bar entirely from Facebook pages.

Instructions

Go Offline in Facebook Chat

1. Log in to Facebook.

2. Click the chat bar.

3. Click "Options."

4. Select "Go Offline."

Block the Chat Bar in Firefox Browser

1. Install the AdBlock Plus add-on for Firefox.

2. Sign in to your Facebook account.

3. Click "Tools" from the Firefox menu bar. Select "AdBlock Plus Preferences."

4. Click "Add Filter" on the bottom-left corner of the window.

5. Type the following text into the "New Filter" field: facebook.com#div(id*=presence)

6. Click "OK"; then click "Apply."

Block Chat Bar in Chrome Browser

1. Install the Adblock extension for Google Chrome.

2. Log in to Facebook.

3. Right-click on the "Chat" bar.

4. Highlight "Adblock"; then click on "Block This Ad."

5. Move the slider from the left side of the bar to the far right side.

6. Click "Looks Good."
