How to Make a Square Root Symbol With Alt Codes

Keyboard shortcuts can help you type and navigate computer tools much faster. Symbols usually have a keyboard shortcut specific to the operating system you are using. Shortcuts generally work in any program where you can type. The Windows keyboard shortcut for the square root symbol is ALT + 251.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the number keypad. Keyboard shortcuts requiring numbers only work if the number keypad is used. Using the numbers above the alphabet will not produce the desired symbol. Use the "Num Lock" key to turn on Number Lock.

    • 2

Hold down the "Alt" key on a PC keyboard. While holding down the "Alt" key, type in the number 251 on the number keypad. This should produce the square root symbol shown as "√."

    • 3

Hold down the "Option" key and type "V" in a Mac computer to produce a square root symbol.
