Instructions

    • 1

Install alarms. Have fire alarms and heat alarms installed according to local building code requirements. Change batteries on a regular basis. Have a plan in place to test alarms regularly.

    • 2

Install exit signs. Post lighted exit signs in clear places at eye level. Do not install with tape. Signs should clearly indicate exit routes.

    • 3

Maintain a clear path to exits. Make sure doors are not blocked and will open in an emergency. If certain doors are not accessible during normal hours, have panic hardware installed.

    • 4

Display fire extinguishers. Place fire extinguishers in clearly visible locations and be sure they are in working order. Make certain the display cases are easily accessible.

    • 5

Prepare a safety manual. Create a safety manual for each employee with details on evacuating in the event of a fire, exit routes, the location of fire extinguishers, and emergency procedures.

    • 6

Maintain sprinkler system. If your building is required by code to have a sprinkler system, make sure the valves are accessible. Keep the sprinkler heads clean and free of obstruction.

    • 7

Use electrical outlets properly. Do not run excessive numbers of extension cords from one outlet. Keep plugs, switches and cords functioning and within code compliance. Do not place cords in areas where someone could trip or under rugs.

    • 8

Maintain electrical appliances and equipment. Keep appliances and equipment well ventilated. If an electrical item is not functioning properly, have it repaired or removed immediately.
