How to Paint a Large Aircraft
If you enjoy building scale model aircraft, at some point you'll probably want to build something really big. There are plenty of kits out there to choose from, but to make them look good, you'll have to apply a top-quality paint job. For a large, highly detailed aircraft model, use a combination of painting techniques to give it a finished appearance you'll be proud to show off.

1
Spray paint your unassembled model with any base color you like. Use light, even, smooth passes, holding the can about 6 or 8 inches from the model and let dry between coats. Mask any parts you don't want painted with duct tape before spraying. If a large part of the model will be white, it's best to use the white spray paint first.

2
Use duct tape to mask off areas that you want to remain the base color. Spray paint the secondary color and let dry. Repeat the process if you want to add more major colors.

3
Paint smaller details with a paint brush. Features such as a cockpit or landing gear struts are good candidates for this kind of detail.
-
4
Split the end of a toothpick with the X-Acto knife. Dip the end in your paint and use the toothpick to paint ultrafine details, like features on a pilot, fancy lettering or instruments on a control panel. Blot the toothpick if needed on a paper towel.
-
5
Assemble your model by following the included instructions. Touch up the paint with a brush where needed.
-
6
Set the airbrush to a fine stream and use a neutral color like light gray to paint final details such as the joints where panels meet on the airplane or the treads on landing gear. Most models have such details molded into the plastic, and painting them will help make the details stand out.
