How to Transfer Probation to Another City

You can transfer your current probation to another city if you want to move, but the transfer is subject to approval by both the current probation department and the new county's department. Probation departments do "courtesy" transfers of people on probation with each other both inside the same state and to other states. The transfer approval is typically dependent on how well you followed the rules for the probation.

Instructions

    • 1

Finish all court-ordered terms of the probation. For example, if required to do a set amount of community service hours, complete all hours and make sure the court has proof of completion.

    • 2

Gather proof of the reason for the move. Showing the reason for the move may help a probation transfer request. For example, include formal job offers if you are moving for work, or proof of a relative's need for assistance if the move is to help family, such as a letter from the relative.

    • 3

Contact the probation officer. Arrange a meeting to discuss a probation transfer to another city. Tell the officer the exact location of where you want to move.

    • 4

Attend the meeting with the officer. Give him or her proof of the reason for the move. Tell the officer you completed all the court-ordered probation requirements.

    • 5

Wait for a response. The officer must get the transfer approved by the court, his supervisor and the authorities responsible for probation in the new city's county.

    • 6

Pay any fees. Some areas charge fees for the transfer to cover expenses and administrative costs.

    • 7

Reapply as soon as the law allows -- typically one month -- if denied. Ask for the reason of the denial and work on the issue to increase the odds of success next time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not move without an approved transfer request.
