How to File Ohio Unemployment Claims After Benefit Years Have Ended

Your Ohio unemployment claim has a maximum benefit amount and when you've collected that amount, the claim is over. You can collect unemployment again when the next benefit year comes, but you have to refile your claim with the Department of Jobs and Family Services. Filing that claim is a lot like filing a new one, including the state reviewing your information to determine if you can collect benefits.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the DJFS website (unemployment.ohio.gov) or call into claims line (877) 644-6562. Use your Social Security number and PIN to log into the system.

    • 2

Select the option to file a new claim. Answer all of the questions presented by the automated system using the information from your support documents. Use the computer keyboard or the telephone keypad to enter your answers, including any compensation amounts you're reporting.

    • 3

Verify the accuracy of your answers. Submit your answers to the DJFS. Do not disconnect your call or close the browser window until you hear or see the confirmation message that your claim has been successfully sent.

Tips & Warnings

  • The PIN you need is the same one you created when you first started collecting benefits and used every week to file your weekly claims. If you have forgotten the PIN, you can reset it by going to the claims website or calling the claims line and providing the email address you set up the claim with. If you don't know the email address, DJFS will mail it to the address on your claim.

  • Anyone can refile their claim with the DJFS but whether you receive benefits depends on whether you meet the eligibility requirements of Ohio's unemployment laws. The DJFS sends you a Notice of Determination with its decision within a week or two.
