How to Create an Origami Box

Origami, the art of folding paper, is often used to create decorative items. Birds, animals, flowers and geometric decorations all can be folded out of paper. However, origami can be useful, as well. Bowls, vases, boxes and other containers can all be made from origami. The masu box is one of the most traditional Japanese origami designs. It is simple to master, and, once you've learned how to do it, you can create boxes in many different sizes or colors. The masu box also has a lid, which makes it even more convenient and useful.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a square piece of paper, color side up, in front of you.

    • 2

Fold the paper in half vertically, bringing the right edge to meet the left edge. Crease and unfold. Fold the paper in half horizontally. Crease and unfold.

    • 3

Turn the paper over. Rotate it so that a corner faces you and the paper looks like a diamond.

    • 4

Fold the bottom corner up so that it touches the center point, which you created with the previous two creases. Fold the left, right and upper corners in so that they too touch the center point.

    • 5

Fold the bottom edge in so that it touches the center of the paper. Crease and unfold. Fold each of the remaining edges in one at a time, to touch the center of the paper. Crease and unfold each fold before moving on to the next.

    • 6

Open the top and bottom triangular flaps of the model. Refold the right and left edges so that they again come in to touch the middle of the paper. These edges will touch each other at the center of the paper.

    • 7

Look at the left edge you just folded in. At the top and bottom of this edge are two diagonal creases. The right edge also has two diagonal creases, at top and bottom. Open the top of the paper out along these creases, while you push the creases themselves down. This collapses the creases and makes the top of the paper rise.

    • 8

Flatten the top of the paper so that it stands upright at a right angle to the rest of the model.

    • 9

Fold the top of the paper down into the box, creasing it where it touches the collapsed corners from the previous step. Tuck it firmly into the box. You'll need to crease the very tip of the paper when it touches the bottom of the box, as well.

    • 10

Repeat steps 7 through 9 on the bottom edge of the model. Push down and in on the diagonal creases to make the bottom edge of the model stand up.

    • 11

Repeat all of these steps to make the lid. Use a piece of paper that is just slightly larger than the piece you used previously. A piece of paper that is the same size as the paper you use for the box will create a very snug lid.
