How to Use a Fax Modem With One Phone Line
By connecting to a computer, a fax modem transmits text and graphics through the phone line to another fax machine that can be in a different city or state or even country. For the fax modem to work, a telephone cable must link the modem to the telephone line. Use a single telephone line to connect with the fax modem and still use the telephone for making calls. Obtain the needed supplies from an electronics store.

1
Unplug the telephone from the telephone socket on the phone plate that is typically at the bottom of a wall, next to the baseboard. Insert the plug of the dual telephone adapter into the telephone socket. Plug the telephone into one of the sockets on the dual telephone adapter.
-
2
Plug one end of a telephone cable into the other socket on the dual telephone adapter. Plug the other end of the telephone cable into the "Tel Out" or "Phone" socket on the fax modem -- the exact name may vary, depending on the model.

3
Launch the fax modem software that came with the fax modem already installed on the computer's hard drive by selecting it from the "Start," "All Applications" pop-up menu.
-
4
Click "File," followed by "Open File" on the fax modem software's main screen. Navigate to the text or graphics file that is to be faxed. Select the text or graphics file with the mouse. Click the "Open" button at the bottom of the window, which closes this window but loads the file for faxing.
-
5
Click the "Phone number," similarly named button or select a name akin to this from the "File" menu. Enter the telephone number of the fax modem or fax machine to receive the fax in the "Text" field on the window that appears on-screen. Press the "Send" button on the window to close the window and send the fax.
-
6
View a progress bar as it fills in from left to right or watch a number chart go from 0 to 100 -- depending on the program -- that indicates how much of the fax has been sent from your fax modem to the other fax modem or fax machine. Quit the program once the progress bar completely fills in, or the number chart reaches 100.
