How to Use the Poke Radar in "Pokemon Diamond"

In "Pokemon Diamond," the Poke Radar is a device that will help you track rare Pokemon in tall grass. Some species of Pokemon, such as Ditto, Tauros and Larvitar, will only appear when you use the Poke Radar. You can also use the device to find shiny Pokemon, which feature abnormal coloring. To receive the Poke Radar, you will have to chat with Professor Rowan after completing the Sinnoh Pokedex.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete the Sinnoh Pokedex by collecting entries for 151 species of Pokemon

    • 2

Visit Professor Rowan in Sandgem Town. You will receive a National Pokedex, which can hold additional Pokemon entries, and the Poke Radar.

    • 3

Travel to a route containing tall grass. For best results, try to center yourself so that the entire screen displays grass.

    • 4

Select the Poke Radar application from your key items menu.

    • 5

Grass will rustle in response to the Poke Radar's tune. A weak rustle will indicate a common Pokemon, while violent rustles indicate rarer species. Rustling grass that shines indicates a shiny Pokemon.

    • 6

Walk to the patch of grass to encounter the Pokemon.

    • 7

Capture the Pokemon in a Poke Ball or knock it out with attacks. After the battle, the Poke Radar will send out another signal automatically.

    • 8

Go to the next patch of rustling grass to encounter the same species of Pokemon again. This is known as "Chaining," and you can repeat this technique until the Poke Radar fails.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the Poke Radar fails, you will need to walk 50 steps before the device is fully recharged and operational.

  • You cannot ride your bike while using the Poke Radar; doing so will cause the device to fail. However, you can ride your bike to recharge the Poke Radar.

  • If you encounter a Pokemon in non-rustling grass, you will need to restart the Poke Radar. To avoid this problem, spray Repel to ward off interfering Pokemon.

  • The Poke Radar will not work on water routes or in caves.
