How Does Scyther Evolve?

By Matt Koble

Unlike most creatures in the "Pokemon" games for Nintendo's handheld systems, Scyther does not evolve at a certain level. Instead, Scyther evolves into Scizor at any level when he's traded for another Pokemon. The evolution will only occur if Scyther has the hold item, Metal Coat. Scizor is a Generation II Pokemon, so in the first generation of games, Scyther did not evolve at all.

Evolving Scyther

To evolve your Scyther, give him the Metal Coat hold item and trade him with a friend. During the trade, Scyther will evolve in Scizor. Make sure it's a friend you can trust to trade him back.

Metal Coat Location

In "Pokemon Gold," "Silver," "Crystal," "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver," you'll find the Metal Coat in the Johto region aboard the SS Aqua ship. In "Fire Red" and "Leaf Green," the Metal Coat is at the Memorial Pillar. You can also get one by beating "Knockout Mode" in the Trainer Tower. In the "Diamond," "Pearl," and "Platinum" versions, it's on Iron Island. For "Pokemon Black" and "White," look on Route 13 or at Twist Mountain in the winter. In "Black 2" and "White 2," you'll find the Metal Coat in either the Clay Tunnel or the Chargestone Cave. Playing "Pokemon X" or "Y," find the hold item in the PokeBall Factory. In "Omega Ruby" and "Alpha Sapphire," find the Metal Coat in New Mauville.

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald

If you're playing the original "Pokemon Ruby," "Sapphire," or "Emerald," you can only get the Metal Coat through trade or by catching a wild Pokemon already holding the item. Pokemon who may be holding the item are Magnemite, Magneton, Steelix, Beldum, Metang and Metagross.
