How to Make a Paper Throwing Square

How to Make a Paper Throwing Square thumbnail
A throwing square can be made with origami paper or a simple piece of printer paper.

Origami paper projects use nothing but folds in a piece of paper to turn a flat sheet into a three-dimensional element. Paper throwing squares are airborne projectiles that cut through the air when thrown, allowing you to toss the square much farther than you would if the paper were unfolded or crumbled up. While a piece of square origami paper is ideal for throwing squares, standard printer paper can also be turned into a square with two folds and a pair of scissors.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a corner of the sheet down to touch the opposite long side of the sheet if you are not using a square piece of paper. The sheet will be shaped like a triangle set atop a rectangle. Skip this step if using a square paper.

    • 2

Fold the rectangular section up to create a crease parallel to the short ends of the paper. Then, cut along the crease to create a square paper with a diagonal crease. Fold one corner of the square down to its opposite corner to create the crease if using a paper that is already square and does not require cutting.

    • 3

Unfold the paper, then fold one corner not touching the crease down to its opposite corner and unfold, creating a paper with an X-shape of creases. The point the creases converge is the center of the paper.

    • 4

Grab one corner and fold in so the point touches the center of the square, then repeat for the remaining corners, creating a smaller square.

    • 5

Flip the paper square over, and fold each corner in toward the center point again to make an even smaller square with four folded flaps.

    • 6

Fold each flap away from center, 1/3 of the way from the outer edges of the squares. Then, turn the square over again. You now have a square with a small triangle extending out the end of each side of the square.

    • 7

Fold the small triangles down over the square, creating a square shape again.

    • 8

Grab each corner of the square and fold in to the center of the square.

    • 9

Place the square under a stack of books, or similar heavy object with a flat bottom, and leave to sit overnight.
