How to Live Humbly as a Christian

How to Live Humbly as a Christian thumbnail
The Bible teaches that Christians should always strive to live humble lives.

Humility is one of the key concepts of Christianity. Humility contrasts with pride, the root of all original sin. Christians believe Adam and Eve chose to eat the forbidden fruit in an act of autonomy, causing the world to descend into a chaotic and sinful state. Humility is the reversal of the sinful state of mankind; by living humbly before God, Christians are acting in a way they were intended to live.

Realize that you are proud. If you are proud, the most difficult thing to do is admit it. C.S. Lewis, a great Christian author, believed that people can tell how proud they are by thinking about how much they dislike proud people. It is important to realize that everyone is proud to some extent.

Read what the Bible says about pride. Throughout the Old and New Testament, pride is condemned as a serious and destructive sin. The Bible says that "Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I [God] hate." (Proverbs 8:13). Conversely, the Bible supports humility and humble living constantly. For example, the Apostle Peter says that "All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another." (1 Peter 5:6).

Decide to change. Once you realize that you need to live a humble life, you must decide to change from any prideful way of life. This decision will set you on the right path of change.

Pray to God that He will help you lead a humble life. Only God can change the heart. In Ezekiel 36:27, God says, "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you." Only God can save people from their sins. It is imperative that you ask for His aid and guidance along the way.

Make practical changes to live a humble life. Don't show off in front of other people and refrain from bragging. Try to rid yourself of any superiority attitude and remind yourself that you are no greater than anyone else. Remember that death is the great equalizer, and that no human is above any other human. Do kind things for other people. Jesus said, "The greatest among you must be a servant" (Matthew 23:11), therefore always be mindful of others and put them above yourself.
