How to Crochet a Mome Rath
Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland," features small creatures called "mome raths." The story's heroine encounters them during her adventures chasing the White Rabbit. Disney's 1951 animated version of "Alice" interprets mome raths as having two long, different colored legs and wide eyes with fuzzy hair tufted at the top of their heads. You can create your own mome rath using a crochet hook, yarn, felt and craft feathers. This whimsical project is sure to intrigue and delight any fan of the book or film.

1
Make a chain stitch by making a slipknot in one of the yarns and placing the knot on the crochet hook. Bring the yarn from back to front across the tip of the hook. Grab the yarn with the tip and pull it through the knot as you drop the knot from the hook. A new loop should remain. Grab the yarn a second time and pull it through the loop as you drop it from the hook to make a second chain stitch. A single new loop should remain.

2
Make five single crochet stitches into the first chain stitch you made. The single crochet stitch is created by inserting the hook into the "V" shape of a stitch, grabbing the yarn and pulling a new loop up onto the hook. Then grab the yarn again and pull it through both of the loops already on the hook as you also drop them off of the hook.

3
Spread out the five single crochet stitches you just made plus the second chain stitch so that they form a circular shape. Place the stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round. Then make two single crochet stitches into each of the six stitches in the round to make 12 stitches.
-
4
Make one single crochet stitch into each stitch of the round. Continue doing this until the piece measures about 3 1/2 inches. Fill the tube with polyester stuffing material.
-
5
Make one single crochet stitch into every other stitch in the round. Do the same thing in the following round. Cut the yarn and draw it through the last loop. Use the tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends to finish the first leg.
-
6
Repeat Steps 1 through 5 to make the second leg. Cut a length of one of the yarns and sew the sides of the top ends of the legs together with the tapestry needle.
-
7
Cut two circles from the white felt for the eyes. Then cut two smaller circles from the black felt for the pupils. Sew the pupils onto the white felt eyes using the black sewing thread. Then sew one eye onto the top side of each leg using the white sewing thread.
-
8
Insert the craft feathers into the tops of the legs to create the mome rath's "hair." Push the feathers down as far as they can go while still sticking up from the head to make sure they are firmly in place.
