If you're not entirely satisfied with the online news and information you consume at no cost but still aren't inclined to pony up the asking prices for journalism at the newsstand or at the website pay wall, there's still a third way to go. A number of websites provide links to magazines offering free subscriptions. Some of these freebies are underwritten by publishers trying to bolster their circulation while others are looking to capture your contact details to sell to marketing companies. Most make money by combining the two. Some by-mail publishers offer a free copy if the customer will sign up for a subscription. In many such offers, the customer is under no obligation if he writes "Cancel" on the bill when it arrives and returns it via mail. The subscription is terminated but the first copy was free, just as the offer stated.
