How to Make a Decorative Star for a Cake Topper
Stars are pointed shapes that are used in many decorative designs. They can be a whimsical motif that inspires playfulness and creativity. Stars make a good choice for a cake topper because of their whimsy. You can make your own decorative star cake topper using felt, ribbon and craft sticks. The cake topper in this project does not sit directly on top of the cake. Instead, the main element hangs from a simple structure whose legs are inserted into the top of the cake.
Things You'll Need
- Three craft sticks
- Craft glue
- Ribbon, two colors
- Felt, two colors
- Scissors
- Sewing needle
- Sewing thread
- Buttons (optional)

Apply a line of craft glue down the middle of one side of one craft stick. Wrap one of the colored ribbons around the stick so that the stick is covered. Cut the end of the ribbon, then press it in place on the stick. Do this for each craft stick. Let the glue dry.

Cut two matching stars from one of the colored pieces of felt using the scissors. The stars should be about half as long as the craft sticks.

Cut two smaller stars from the second color of felt. Sew each of the smaller stars onto the middle of each of the larger stars with the needle and thread. Sew buttons onto the embellished sides of the stars if you wish.

Cut a short strip of the second color of ribbon and fold it in half. Line the two stars up evenly with the decorated sides facing outward. Slip the ends of the folded ribbon under the top point of the star. Sew the two stars together. When you reach the star's top point, sew through the ribbon as well as the felt to secure the ribbon in place.

Slip the star's ribbon loop over one of the craft sticks. Arrange the craft sticks so that two are positioned vertically, with the stick with holding the star running horizontally across the tops of the vertical sticks. Use the craft glue to secure the sticks in place.
