Silk is a luxurious fabric that can be tub dyed.

Silk is a relatively expensive and luxurious fabric that is made from fibers produced by silk worms. If you have silk that you want to dye a different color, consider using the tub-dyeing method. Tub dyeing is done with cold water instead of hot water, and is therefore less harmful to the fabric. Using simple tools that you likely have around your house, you can change the appearance of a piece of silk fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your silk with textile detergent that is safe for use with silk. Allow the fabric to dry before beginning the dyeing process.

    • 2

Dissolve the dye in a cup of water, and mix it well with a spoon. You do not want any chunks of dye left that can cause a strange effect on the fabric. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the correct amount of dye to use for the amount of fabric that you are dyeing.

    • 3

Dissolve non-iodized salt in the correct amount of water according to the dye manufacturer's directions, and add it to the tub or bucket along with the dye and water. Add a small amount of calsolene oil -- a few splashes -- to keep the dye from streaking.

    • 4

Add the fabric to the tub, bucket or washing machine. Stir frequently for 20 minutes. If you are not able to stir, place the materials in your washing machine and let it agitate for 20 minutes.

    • 5

Add the correct amount of vinegar, according to the dye manufacturer's directions. Stir again for 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the desired saturation of the color.

    • 6

Remove the silk from the container and rinse it well. Wash it with a textile detergent that is safe for silk; allow it to air dry.
