How to Select Objects in Photoshop on a Laptop

Adobe Photoshop is useful for editing digital photographs, and if you have the software on your laptop, you can edit wherever you go. Laptops create specific challenges, though, because track pads do not necessarily lend themselves to precision when it comes to drawing, sketching and outlining. If, for example, you need make precise selections in Photoshop, you might feel more comfortable on your desktop computer, but your laptop can nevertheless get the job done.

      Open Photoshop on your laptop. To open a specific image that you want to edit, click "File" on the menu bar and select "Open." Choose your digital photograph using the navigation window.

      Open your toolbar if it is not already open. Your toolbar is a long vertical strip with two columns of icons appearing on the left side of your screen. If you cannot find it, access it by clicking "Window > Tools" on your menu bar.

      Connect a USB mouse to your laptop for easier selections. If you want to draw precise selections with the Lasso tool, an external mouse can make your job much easier. Just connect it to your USB port and hold down the button while rolling the mouse in the direction of your desired selection. After drawing your selection, release the mouse button.

      Click any of the selection tools on your tool bar. You can use the Marquee tool, which looks like a broken rectangle, to select perfect shapes, or you can use the Lasso tool to draw precise selections with your mouse. This is useful if you need to select the outline of a face or tree, for example. If you want the selection to automatically cling to hard lines, select the Magnetic Lasso.

      Draw the outline of your selection using your track pad if you do not have a USB mouse. If using the Marquee tool, draw your selection by holding down the track pad button on the left side while swiping your middle finger along the pad. When you finish expanding your selection, release the track pad.
