Apply a coin-sized amount of dread shampoo to your palm and wash your scalp thoroughly. Move your fingers between each lock to cover every inch of your scalp.

    • 3

Rinse your scalp under the shower head, allowing the the shampoo suds to run down the length of your dreads. Washing each individual dread is not necessary. Ensure that all the soap has been rinsed from your scalp and dreads before exiting the shower.

Wring out your dreads if they are long enough to do so. If not, squeeze them with a clean towel. Shake your head back and forth to wick off excess water.

Dry your dreads completely using a hair dryer on a cool setting. Ensure that your dreads are completely dry to avoid mildew or mold growth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear a hat or other head covering if you plan on camping, hiking or performing in other outdoor activities. This will prevent dust, dirt, sand and small bugs from becoming trapped in your locks.

  • Be sure to use a shampoo formulated specifically for dreadlocks. Normal shampoos contain conditioners and other chemicals which can cause your locks to unravel.

  • Proper scalp care is necessary if you have dreadlocks. Wash your scalp at least weekly.

  • Never apply dreadlock wax to wet hair. This usually causes the locks to smell musty and foul.
