Photo Touch up Tutorial for GIMP

As your photos get older, they often get damaged by wear and tear. This damage can range from spots to tears and cracks. Many people will take photos damaged in this way to a professional restorer, which can be expensive, especially if you have many photos to repair. While you could use a commercial graphics application like Photoshop to do this work yourself, you could also use the freeware photo-editor GIMP.

Instructions

    • 1

Scan the photo you want to edit and load it onto your computer. Be careful when you do this to avoid damaging the photo further. Set the scanner software to at least 300dpi.

    • 2

Start the GIMP application. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog, locate and open the photo you loaded.

    • 3

Select the "Clone" tool from the toolbar. Choose "Fuzzy 19" as the brush tip.

    • 4

Hold down the "CTRL" key and left-click on a spot near an area you want to retouch. This will select the pixels in that spot as a reference point. Hold down the left mouse button and paint over the spot you want to fix.

    • 5

Repeat step 4 for all of the damage you want to retouch. Save your work.
