How to Write the Title of a Letter in Italics

Italics set off text from the text around it.

Italics, a slanted version of regular text, are used to denote something a little more important than the other words on the page. Whether you're trying to denote the title of a magazine, book or movie or you're trying to set aside a foreign word, italics will help you do just that. Once you have decided on the title of your letter, consider writing or typing it in italics.

Instructions

  1. Handwritten Italics

    • 1

Practice writing the alphabet in italics. The spacing needed for italic letters is different from that needed for regular letters.

    • 2

Sketch the title of your letter beforehand. Once you have decided on the title for your letter, practice writing it out in italics on scratch paper before you write it on the actual letter you intend to send.

    • 3

Write the title of your letter in italics on the top of the page.

    Computer Italics

    • 4

Open your word processor to begin your letter.

    • 5

Type the title of your letter at the top of the page.

    • 6

Highlight the title of your letter. Click on the slanted "I" in the toolbar to make the title italics. You can also hold "CTRL+I," a shortcut to create italic words.
