A DIY Tyvek Netbook Sleeve

Protect your netbook with a padded, Tyvek sleeve.

You can keep your netbook safe on your travels with a homemade netbook sleeve made from a piece of Tyvek weather wrap and a layer of foam padding. The Tyvek helps keep moisture away from the equipment and the foam padding helps protect the netbook from unexpected bangs and bumps. If you would like to make the sleeve a little bit more stylish, add a fabric cover over top of the Tyvek.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the netbook. Multiple the length by two and add 4 inches for a final length. Add 2 inches to the width for a final length. For example, a netbook with a length of 12 inches and a width of 8 inches will have a final sleeve length of 28 inches by a final sleeve width of 10 inches.

    • 2

Lay a piece of Tyvek weather wrap on a clean working surface and draw a rectangle that measures the final length of the netbook by the final width.

    • 3

Cut a rectangular piece of ¼-inch foam padding with a width of 1 inch less than the final width from step 1 and a length of 3 inches less than the final length. Using the example above, the foam padding rectangle will equal 9 inches wide by 23 inches long.

    • 4

Place the Tyvek rectangle on your working surface. Cover one side of the foam padding with a layer of glue and align the padding over top of the Tyvek. Arrange the padding ½-inch away from each long edge and 1 ½ inches away from each short edge.

    • 5

Place the foam padding on your working surface and cover it in a layer of glue. Center the Tyvek rectangle on the foam padding with ½-inch of the Tyvek overhanging each side of the padding. Smooth the pieces together.

    • 6

Flip over the rectangles so the Tyvek is on the bottom. Fold the 1 ½ inches of extra Tyvek at the short ends over top of the foam padding and sew it in place.

    • 7

Turn the pieces back over so the Tyvek is on the bottom and fold the pieces in half lengthwise to reduce the length in half. Pin the ½-inch of Tyvek along the sides and sew the pieces together.

    • 8

Turn the sleeve right side out.

    • 9

Cut a long ½-inch-wide piece of Velcro and apply a line of glue to the back of the Velcro. Press it against the top center of the inside of the sleeve. Glue the complementary piece of Velcro to the opposite interior side of the sleeve.
