Illusions keep children focused on the lesson.

Some churches shy away from the word "magic" because it is associated with evil. The proper term a Sunday school teacher should use is "illusion" so that it does not offend parents or other church leaders. Illusions can be used effectively to teach Bible lessons to children in Sunday school or junior church. The illusion, along with a well-planned lesson, will make the main point stick with the kids for a lifetime.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan a lesson around a magic trick to make a specific point. For instance, if the trick requires something vanishing, the lesson could be centered around God forgiving sin and sending it away so that he will never see it again. If you are using the trick to drive home a point, it should be short and near the end of class. If you are using several tricks to teach the lesson, build up suspense with each one as you teach the lesson and perform the tricks.

    • 2

Practice the trick. Practice makes perfect, and having a smooth flowing lesson accompanied by flawless execution of the tricks will go a long way in creating a memorable lesson. Plan each sentence of the lesson to be spoken at precise times as you perform the trick. Practice the trick and the lesson until you are confident you'll get it right when it counts.

    • 3

Set up the classroom. Some tricks are made to be seen up close while others are to be seen from a distance. Keep this in mind when you choose a magic trick and set up the class. Create special lighting effects to set a mood of intrigue. You can use black lights or laser lights and a fog machine; it depends on what will work with the space you have.

    • 4

Teach the lesson and perform the tricks. Repeat your main point of the lesson several times throughout the class time. If you will be doing more tricks in the coming weeks, tell the kids; use it as a hook to get them excited about coming back each week.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using the word "magic." Use "tricks" or "illusions" instead.
