How to Hook Up the AT&T Router With an iMac G4

When you sign up for AT&T's DSL service, you may also get shipped a router that allows you to connect more than one computer to the DSL Internet connection. Some routers are also wireless, letting you connect computers, phones and PDAs to the Internet via a wireless connection. Connecting the router to the iMac allows you to have a connection that's faster than dial-up and in some cases, cable modems as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the Ethernet cable included with the self-install kit to the Ethernet port on the back of the iMac.

    • 2

Connect the other end of the Ethernet port to the "1" or "Computer 1" port of the AT&T Router.

    • 3

Connect the other supplied Ethernet cable to the "Internet port" on the Router, then connect the other end to the AT&T DSL modem's "Ethernet" or "Network" port. Some AT&T routers also serve as modems; check your instruction manual. If your router is a modem, skip this step.

    • 4

Connect the DSL modem's Internet port to the nearest telephone cable supplied with the kit to the nearest phone jack and turn it and the router on. Allow all of the lights to turn on before continuing.

    • 5

Insert the CD that came with your router into the PC, then click through the on-screen prompts to set up your router. If your router did not come with a CD, open your PC Web browser, which should automatically take you to a login page. Enter your AT&T user name and password and click "Log in" to connect.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your modem is separate from your router, you may need to set it into "Bridge mode" before it will work with your router. Consult your modem's manual or contact the manufacturer's technical support for specific information on setting this mode.
