How to Fix a Dropped Laptop With a Screen That Is in Colors

If you have dropped your laptop and now are dealing with a screen that is pixelated or bleeding colors, it may be preventing you from using the computer altogether. There are ways to troubleshoot the screen to see if you can fix it before taking the extreme step of total screen replacement. This process requires disassembly of the screen assembly, but it can be completed in a matter of minutes.

Step 1

Power your laptop off and open the screen so that you have full access to the LCD.

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove all screws from the plastic frame that surrounds the LCD screen.

Step 3

Pry the frame off the screen to reveal the inverter board mounted below the LCD. This may be where the problem lies.

Step 4

Unplug the wires that connect to the end of the inverter board and plug them back in, making sure they are secure.

Power the laptop back on. If the screen is still malfunctioning, proceed to the next step.

Power the computer off and tilt the LCD itself forward. You will notice a screen ribbon cable connected at the back of the screen.

Step 7

Unplug the ribbon cable from its port at the back of the screen and plug it back in, making sure it is secure.

Step 8

Power the computer on and check the screen. If it is still malfunctioning, you may need to replace it completely. If this is the case, power the computer off, obtain a new LCD screen, and proceed to the next step.

Step 9

Remove the screws from the metal brackets on either side of the damaged screen.

Step 10

Unplug the ribbon cable from the back of the damaged screen and slide the screen out of the computer and set it aside.

Step 11

Fit the new screen into the brackets and plug the cable into the back of the screen. Reverse the steps for reassembly.
