Jurors help decide the verdict in court cases.

Jury duty is a civil obligation of all United States citizens over the age of 18. Selected at random, you may receive a summons -- by mail -- to appear for jury service. Your summons for jury duty may be at a court of common pleas or criminal court. Failure to report for jury duty can result in a warrant for your arrest -- this is punishable by fines and imprisonment. You will need to confirm if you are required to appear for jury duty the day before you are expected to serve.

Instructions

    • 1

Receive a juror summons in the mail. Depending upon the state and county you live in, you may need to register online. Registration includes basic demographic information, military status and employment status.

    • 2

Place your juror summons in a safe place. Place the summons preferably in a place were you will see the summons and remember that date you may be required to serve. If required to attend jury duty, you will need to bring your summons with you. Mark this date on your calendar.

    • 3

Call or go online the day before you are expected to appear for jury duty. Call the number on your jury duty summons or visit the website indicated on your summons. You will likely have to call after four in the afternoon -- this may vary based on location.

    • 4

Enter your jury number or group number on the phone or on the county's website. You will receive a message on your screen or hear a recording by phone, indicating whether or not you are required to attend jury duty the following day. If you are required, instructions may be provided on exactly where and what time to arrive.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are unable to attend jury duty, call the number on your juror summons. You may be granted a postponement. If an emergency arises in the days leading up to jury duty, call the emergency number on your juror summons.
