How Do I Know What Level of Unemployment Extension I Am On in California?

When you exhaust your initial unemployment claim in California, you may move onto extended unemployment benefits. As of May 2011, a total of four tiers of federal extended unemployment benefits are available in California. The state also has its own extended benefits program, which claimants can go on once all four federal tiers have been used up. Since California automatically files your extension applications for you, the level you are on may not be clear to you. Fortunately, you can find out your level in more than one way.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the letter you received by mail before you began receiving claim forms for the extension. The California Employment Development Department sends out letters for each extension to let you know which extension you are on and how many weeks of benefits are remaining.

    • 2

Call one of the EDD customer service numbers and ask a representative which extension you are on. The EDD website has a list of the phone numbers, which are different numbers for different languages.

    • 3

Send a secure message to EDD via the Ask EDD website. You must confirm your identity by including your weekly benefit amount.

    • 4

Mail a letter to EDD asking which extension you are on. To get the quickest response, use the following address:

      Employment Development Department

      P.O. Box 826880 -- UIPCD, MIC 40

      Sacramento, CA 94280-0001
