How to Set Up Twitter to Text Updates

Twitter lets you tell the world what you think and feel in 140 characters or less. The social networking and microblogging site also lets you follow your friends and family, favorite celebrities and businesses to get minute-by-minute updates on what they are doing. Once you activate your mobile phone on your Twitter account, you can have tweets and messages sent directly to your phone as SMS texts.

      Log into your Twitter account.

      Click your user name located at the top-right part of the page and click "Settings."

      Click the "Mobile" tab on the "Settings" page.

      Click the drop-down menu next to "Country/region" and select your country or region.

      Type your mobile phone number in the text field provided. Click "Start."

      Text "GO" to 40404 to verify your number with Twitter.

      Go back to the "Settings" page by clicking your user name and selecting "Settings," and click the "Mobile" tab.

      Check the boxes for what type of updates you want sent as texts to your phone. You can get text updates any time someone mentions or replies to you, from people you follow and direct messages. You can also choose to limit the time of day Twitter sends texts to you.

Tips & Warnings

  • To get text updates for specific people you follow, go to their Twitter page and click the mobile icon next to the "Following" button.
