Quilt squares should be the same size.

Quilts come in various sizes and designs, many of which involve basic quilting squares. When you first begin planning your quilt, it is important to determine what size your squares should be. This helps you purchase the appropriate amount of fabric to make your quilt. While there are no set rules for the size of the squares, just as there are no rules for the size of the quilt, the squares should be uniform.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which size quilt you want to make. Consider the use, such as decoration, a baby quilt or a full-sized bed quilt.

    • 2

Divide the measurements for the quilt by the number of squares you will use for each row. Quilts often use between three and nine squares per horizontal row. The number of squares in a vertical row varies depending on the size of the quilt and the size of the squares. Consider if you are using a border, as this reduces the number of squares in a row and their size.

    • 3

Add 1/2 inch to each side of the square to accommodate the stitching. Each square will overlap by 1/4 inch on each side when you sew the quilt together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Piece your quilt together after cutting, to ensure that your final measurements will be correct. Overlap the squares by 1/4 inch on each side.
