A breakaway switch needs a battery to power the brakes.

Towing a trailer can be hazardous, especially if the trailer becomes detached from the tow vehicle. Installing a trailer breakaway kit can mitigate such incidents. A breakaway kit triggers a switch that activates the trailer's brakes if a breakaway occurs. To effect a breakaway kit, your trailer needs a battery. If it doesn't already have one, you will need to install a battery to power the breaker without the vehicle's electrical connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Run the black wire from the breakaway battery box to the red wire on the trailer's harness and connect the two with a scotch lock connector. These work by placing one wire in each groove and closing the gate. This wire charges the battery when it is not in use.

Run the white wire from the breakaway battery box to the white wire on the trailer's harness and connect with a scotch lock connector. This wire is the neutral connection.

    • 3

Run the blue wire from the breakaway box to the breakaway switch and connect to one of the blue wires with a scotch lock connector.

    • 4

Run the other blue wire from the breakaway switch to the blue wire on the trailer's harness and connect with a scotch lock connector.

    • 5

Wrap all of the connections tightly with electrical tape. Secure the loose wires to the trailer with cable ties.
