How to Start As an Accountant

How to Start As an Accountant thumbnail
An accountant's job can range from creating business growth plans to creating a client's retirement plan.

While a majority of work an accountant does deals with crunching numbers, balancing budgets and completing financial statements, accounts can also be leaders in boardrooms and can take various career paths. For example, a forensic accountant investigates fraud. But first, an aspiring accountant needs to do plenty in order to get into the profession.

Instructions

    • 1

Get an education, at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related financial or business field. Some accountants have master's degrees in accounting or business administration.

    • 2

Get certified. In order to file documents as a public accountant with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, accountants must obtain the designation of a certified public accountant (CPA). This designation is offered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants through the Uniform CPA Evaluation. Each exam is administered by the state affiliates of the institute. Not all states have the same requirements and exams for certification.

    • 3

Work at accounting firms to gain experience. You need at least two years of experience in most states to be licensed as a public accountant. This time must be spent working under an already designated CPA.

    • 4

Get a job. Some accountants begin their careers at public accounting firms, which means they do work (such as auditing) for other companies. Some work for private companies, where they work as part of the internal accounting department, ensuring books are balanced and preparing financial statements.

Tips & Warnings

  • Licensing requirements vary by state, so contact your state board to determine specific requirements for the CPA designation.
