How to Rent a Youth Hostel
Youth hostels provide an alternative lodging option for people traveling. They are typically cheaper than hotels and can accommodate individuals or groups of travelers. They are popular among younger travelers who might not be able to afford a hotel but still want to sleep in a bed and have access to a shower and other amenities. Many youth hostels are communal, meaning guests share common areas like recreational facilities and restrooms.

1
Search online for hostels in the area to see any hostels available to rent, or visit hostel chain websites like Hostels, Hostel World or Hostelling International (see Resources).
-
2
Use the hostel or hostel company's website to search for availability on the dates you plan to be in the area. Enter the country, city, dates and number of people. Most hostels request that you specify the number of males, females, kids and adults. Or, obtain the hostel's phone number and call to check availability. Due to time zones and language barriers, using the website may be easier than calling. The website will display all room and bed types available, as well as cost.

Select the accommodation type that best fits your needs. Book the hostel reservation online using your name and credit card information. Some hostels charge your card immediately, some use the card to hold the reservation and some require you to pay a deposit when you book and the rest when you check in or check out of the hostel. You can also call the hostel to book over the phone.

Tips & Warnings
Like hotels, hostel rates vary by days. They are typically more expensive during higher travel times, like summer, weekends, holidays or events. To save money, travel during a less busy time during the week.
Some hostel companies offer memberships. Memberships are usually free and give you discounted rates. Become a member to take advantage.
Use lockers at hostels to keep your belongings safe. Some hostels are safer than others, but never leave your valuables out in the open, as other travelers might be tempted to steal them.
