Draw a Cowboy Hat Easily

The cowboy hat has been a symbol of western civilization since the early 1800s. Possibly evolving from the Mexican sombrero, the cowboy hat was developed in a similar fashion, with a large brim to protect outdoor laborers from the harsh elements of the surrounding environments. If you wish to draw a picture of a cowboy hat, you may want to use a picture or series of pictures of these types of hats to assist you in accurately detailing the drawing. Use patience while working through each section of the cowboy hat, as this will improve the quality of your drawing far more than experience will.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch an oval that is longer in height than width to create the base for the cowboy hat. The bottom of this oval should be a straight line, though, as this type of hat features a flat underside where the head of the person fits. Use light pencil strokes to sketch this guideline, as you will eventually erase certain parts of the hat.

    • 2

Make a slight dip in the top of the oval, or topside of the hat. Check the picture you are using as a reference to perfect this indention. This particular feature of cowboy hats can differ greatly, so its portrayal in the drawing is strictly up to your own interpretation.

    • 3

Sketch out the brim of the cowboy hat as it is pictured in the reference guide. Depending on the particular angle of this hat, the curved lines of the brim could very likely cover a portion of the front of the cowboy hat. You may choose to draw the brim of the hat level in front and raised up on either side.

    • 4

Draw a 1/2-inch line around the base of the hat, just above the brim. This characteristic will give the cowboy hat a decorative accessory. If the picture you are using as a reference contains a buckle or any other feature in this area, sketch this piece accordingly.

    • 5

Check the rough draft of your cowboy hat against the reference picture, and clean up any inconsistencies in proportions or general look at this time. Erase any guidelines you used to create the hat as well.

    • 6

Trace all intended pencil lines of the hat with an ink pen to create a bolder look. Carefully move the pen over each of the pencil lines in a smooth and concise manner, as you could easily smear the ink or make other erratic marks. Let the ink dry, then completely erase all remaining pencil marks on the page.
