Observe the people around you. The first step to recognizing the many diverse cultures and practices around us is to see the differences up close. It is helpful to visit museums, attend cultural events and go to other new places to observe. These new experiences are often educational and enlightening.

2
Read up on different beliefs and practices. Books, magazines and the Internet are good places to start. Educational television shows on stations such as National Geographic and the History Channel often highlight different beliefs and practices. Watching television shows is a good way to share knowledge of different beliefs and practices with your family.

Ask questions whenever possible. If you know someone whose beliefs and practices are different from yours, let the person know you are interested in learning more about them. Ask questions in a respectful, delicate manner. The other person is taking the time to answer your questions, so it is important to show you appreciate their time and willingness to talk with you about their views.

4
Attend services at different churches. Don't interrupt services with questions; wait until the service is over before asking any questions you might have about what took place. This allows you and your family to experience different types of spiritual practices and gain a greater appreciation for other beliefs.
