How to Download a 5th Gen iPod to a PC
The fifth generation iPod, originally released in 2005, is a touch-wheel iPod model available in 30, 60 and 80 GB models. Using iTunes (Apple's media management program), you can transfer music, videos, photos and games to your fifth generation iPod. If you need to transfer these files from your iPod back to your PC, however, you may find yourself at a loss because iTunes does not enable this function.

1
Download an iPod extraction program compatible with your operating system. For example, Windows XP, Vista and 7 users can use MediaMonkey, iPod-to-PC Transfer, Songbird or Yamipod. Mac users can use Senuti, iPod Rip or imTOO iPod Computer Transfer.

2
Connect your iPod to your PC. The fifth generation iPod uses a white docking cable with a wide connector and a slim connector. The wide connector slides into the bottom of the iPod, and the slim connector slides into a USB port on your computer. Your iTunes software should then open automatically, but you can close it, as you will not need it right now.

Open your iPod extraction software. Locate your iPod libraries in the left column and highlight them with your mouse. If you want to download only some of the content to your PC, then highlight only select libraries or files. If you have the 30 GB model, you may be able to download the entire iPod in a matter of minutes. If you have the 80 GB model, and have nearly reached your maximum capacity, downloading may take several hours.

Click the "Copy," "Transfer" or "Export" button. You can typically find this on the right side of your software window, near the top or bottom corner. A dialogue box will appear, asking you to choose a "Save" location on your hard drive. Select the folder where you want to save your iPod contents and then click the "Save" or "OK" button in the dialogue window.

5
Click the triangular "Eject" button to eject your iPod. While newer iPods (like the iPod Touch) allow you to safely disconnect without ejecting, the fifth generation iPod requires you to click an "Eject" button before physically disconnecting the device. This ensures that all file transfers conclude smoothly. After ejecting, your iPod screen will notify you when you can safely disconnect.
