Instructions

    • 1

Smooth the stucco surface using a damp cloth as soon as the final layer has been applied. This gives you a fresh canvas on which to apply the texture of the stucco. You may find that you like the appearance of the stucco smooth. If so, allow the surface to cure as is.

    • 2

Sweep the surface of the stucco using a brush or a broom to create the appearance of lines in the stucco surface. Avoid pressing the broom into the stucco. Simply sweeping the surface with the broom at an angle will impart the desired texture. You can create straight lines or a crosshatched pattern in this manner. You can also turn the broom or brush in a clockwise motion to produce a circular pattern. Allow the surface to cure when finished.

Use a texturing paint roller to create a flocked surface texture. This texture is best applied while the stucco is slightly wet, so as to allow the roller to lift small points of stucco off of the surface. The points will be sharp when they have dried, so if you want to remove the sharp points, use a wet rag an hour after you have applied the texture to smooth off the sharp points.

Wet your hands thoroughly with water and use them to smooth the stucco and impart a hand-laid appearance. Make certain to rinse your hands regularly with water, as Portland cement can irritate your skin. Use your palms to create large, curved impressions while using your fingertips to create wavy swirls.

Use shaped texture rollers with a paint roller to impart geometric or other designs into the stucco. There are dozens of designs to choose from, including numerous flower designs. The texture can be applied at intervals along the wall, or as an all-over texture. Rollers of this type work best when you apply the roller to the top of the wall being textured and roll in a downward motion.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid applying stucco textures that might trap water. Freezing can crack and separate stucco from the surface it is applied to.
