No matter where you are in the world, you'll probably run into a couple Americans.

If you meet an American guy and like his accent, he will probably appreciate a compliment about it. While Americans living overseas do get asked a lot of questions based on their accents, they don't often get compliments on them, as many people find American accents nasal and hard on the ear. So, to give an American a compliment on his accent you need to be clear and genuine.

Instructions

    • 1

Tell him that you like his accent. This is easy because it's so simple. All you have to say is "I like your accent."

    • 2

Back your compliment up with something. "I like your accent" is fairly hollow, but if you say "I like your accent; it reminds me of my favorite action movie," then you will be more sincere, and the compliment will be better-recieved.

Ask him a question. Americans who live overseas get asked questions about where they are from all the time, and if you ask him this he will likely just give you a canned speech he's given to hundreds of people. So, tailor your question to your follow-up statement. In the step above, you told him his voice reminded you of your favorite action movie, so you could follow on that by asking him if he's seen it. If you want to talk to an American, you need to get the focus off the fact that he's American if you want to stand out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure he's American before you compliment him for having a great American accent, because Canadians don't take kindly to accent confusion.
