How to Tie on Knitting
Before you can knit your first stitch, you have to tie on your knitting. This is done by making a slip knot (also called a "loop knot"). It anchors the yarn to the knitting needle, allowing you establish even tension from the start of your cast-on, and it counts as your first cast-on stitch. Perfecting your knitting tie-on will ensure that your cast-on edge looks as good as your bind-off edge.
Instructions

1
Pull a length of yarn from your skein or hank; you will need around 8 inches. Wrap this length into a loop, leaving the loose end on the top.
-
2
Insert your fingers through the loop and lightly grasp the end of the yarn coming from the skein and pull it through the loop an inch or two.

3
Place the tip of your knitting needle into the loop you just made. Holding the needle with the loop on it, tug gently on the free end of the yarn with your other hand until the knot tightens. The knitting tie on is now complete.

Tips & Warnings
Reinforce your knitting tie on by looping the yarn twice before pulling the knot loop through.
Pull gently when making a slip knot or else your cast on edge could buckle.
Use at least 8 inches of yarn to make your slip knot so that you will have enough length to adequately weave in the end to prevent raveling.
