Kitchen counter tops are prone to clutter, and with limited space available, it is important to make the most of what you have. Because you use the kitchen every day, it's best to think of your counter space as a working area. If this area is cluttered, you need to take the time to clean up a specific area before you prepare a meal. If your counter tops are clear and organized, you can enjoy your kitchen more. Once you know what items to keep on your counters, you can arrange them in a way that gives your kitchen style and functionality. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all items from counters and clean your cabinets thoroughly.

    • 2

Place items that you use every day back on the counters. Your microwave, toaster, blender and coffee machine are examples of items you'll want to keep on your counters because you use them regularly. Place your blender next to your sink so you can pour over the sink and avoid messes. Place your coffeemaker on the other side of the sink, so you can fill it with water easily.

    • 3

Leave about 1 to 2 feet of counter space on either side of your stove for preparing food and moving around pots and pans while you're cooking. Put your microwave close to the refrigerator and place your breadbox next to your toaster.

    • 4

Place any containers of utensils or canisters next to the area where you prepare most of your food, so you'll have these items nearby when you need them.

    • 5

Put dish-washing liquid, sponges and soap behind the sink fixtures to conserve space.

    • 6

Store fresh food, such as bananas, apples and oranges in decorative baskets or bowls and put them on the dining table to give you more counter space.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep ornamental items off counter tops. Use counters for functional items and place decorative pieces on the walls and on your table.

  • Put items you use less than once a week in a cabinet, drawer or pantry.

  • Install shelves to keep items you use regularly off the counter tops but still within reach.

  • Attach small hooks or clothespins inside cabinet doors for items such as gloves, towels and sponges.

  • Take time at the end of every day to wipe down counter tops to prevent clutter from building up.
