How to Make a Weekly Claim for Unemployment in Illinois

The weekly claims certification is the process through which you verify your unemployment eligibility for the previous week in question. Illinois is one of the states that schedules you to certify every other week, and you answer a series of questions for each of the previous two weeks. To complete the process, you call into the claims line or log into the claims site to send your answers to the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).

Things You'll Need

  • Social Security number
  • Personal identification number (PIN)

How to Make a Claim by Phone

Call the claims line (888-337-7234). Select the option to certify for benefits. Log in using your Social Security number and the PIN you created when you started your claim.

Use the telephone keypad to answer all of the automated questions in the certification system. Enter any monetary amounts in dollars and cents followed by the pound ("#") key.

Do not disconnect the call until you hear the message confirming your claim has been submitted to the IDES.

Access the IDES claim site on your computer’s Internet browser (see Resources). Click “Go.” Click “Continue.” Click “I agree.”

Log in to the claims system with your username and PIN. Answer all of the questions on your certification page using your computer’s keyboard to enter answers and amounts. Click “Submit” when you’re ready to submit your claim.

Print the message confirming your claim has been made or write down the confirmation number displayed for your records.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you file online, you must use Internet Explorer to do so. If you don't have that program on your computer, file using the phone.
  • Remember that although the process is called weekly claims certification, you do it biweekly. You certify for each previous week separately during the process. If you miss a week, you can call the claims line and speak to a live representative who can help you.
  • Do not close the web browser before you see the message confirming your claim has been made.
  • All information you provide to the IDES during your certification process must be true to the best of your knowledge. If it's not, you can be prosecuted for unemployment claims fraud and lose your benefits. If you make a mistake on your certification, call the claims line and speak to a live representative to correct the mistake as soon as possible.
