How to Give Parrots Milk

How to Give Parrots Milk thumbnail
Milk-based treats are a good supplement to a healthy, balanced diet.

Parrots are very interesting and unique pets --- after all, how many people are able to have conversations with their animal companions? Like many pets, parrots require a balanced diet that includes healthy vegetables, nuts and seeds. Generally speaking, parrots will eat almost anything that is safe for humans with the exception of chocolate, alcohol and some vegetables. Also, since parrots are, for the most part, lactose intolerant, it is not a good idea to feed your parrot straight milk. Instead, offer your bird yogurt, cheese and other baked goods that contain milk products. This way your bird will get a good source of calcium without the upset stomach.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed them fruit or nut treats that are covered in yogurt. This is a common type of parrot treat that is widely available in the exotic bird section of most pet stores. Yogurt is good for birds because the natural bacteria help improve digestion.

    • 2

Cut up small cubes of cheese and give them to the parrot in small quantities to see if it eats them. Parrots are generally wary of new treats, but if the bird tries it and likes it, cheese could become a rare and special treat. Offer the treats inside the parrot's food dish, or let it nibble the goodies out of your hand as a bonding experience.

    • 3

Bake your parrot special treats that contain either cheese or yogurt or small quantities of milk. Muffins or birdie cakes are sure to please even the most fickle parrot (see the Resources section for links to recipes containing milk).
