How to Be Nicki Minaj for Halloween

Songstress Nicki Minaj draws a lot of her style inspiration from Barbie.

You should have no trouble executing a Nicki Minaj Halloween costume. The singer herself constructs transformative costumes that have shaped her persona. She draws much of her inspiration from Barbie dolls, which is a suitable reference point when choosing the components for your own costume. A general rule for the outfit is that everything should look as much like plastic as possible, which will make the costume inexpensive, as well.

• Blonde or pink wig
• Pink lipstick
• Pink eyeshadow
• Short, sparkly dress
• Panty hose or tights
• High-heeled shoes

Instructions

1. Choose a blonde or pink wig. On the cover of her debut album, Minaj wore a long, straight, pink wig with bangs. The hair looked identical to Barbie doll hair. Look for a wig that is glossy and synthetic looking. Minaj favors blonde and pink, though other colors would be acceptable.

2. Apply heavy makeup. Use liquid black eyeliner and apply it liberally. Use false eyelashes. Apply bright eyeshadow and blush and go for the pinkest lipstick or lip gloss you can find. Paint your fingernails with a high-gloss nail lacquer. Accent your face and any exposed skin above the waist with sparkle or shimmer lotion.

3. Wear a short, sparkly dress. There is no such thing as "too much" sparkle in this case. Though Minaj may dress provocatively, she is never vulgar. You cannot go too far with dress adornment, but you can go too far by wearing too little clothing. Stay appropriately covered, but keep it girly.

4. Wear tights or panty hose with a sheen. Part of Barbie's image and Minaj's by extension are her impossibly long, flawless legs. Minaj replicates this quality by wearing flesh-toned panty hose that are semi-sheer and shiny. Again, refer to the photo on her album. Her long legs are extended, lean and evenly toned. Minaj obviously got some help from Photoshop for her album art, but you can replicate the aesthetic with the right pair of leg wear.

5. Choose shoes with the highest heel you can bear wearing for the night. Be realistic. If you will be walking around a lot, do not choose tight, high-arching shoes. Choose shoes that sparkle or shine. Patent leather is an ideal choice.
