How to Clear the PRAM on a Locked Mac
Parameter Random Access Memory on a Mac is equivalent to the Non-Volatile RAM that PCs use to store basic information about the computer's hardware configuration settings, such as the amount of memory installed in the computer system. Occasionally the PRAM on a Mac gets corrupted, which can cause many different small problems with the computer, including random lockups. You can clear the PRAM on a locked Mac to reset the stored settings back to their factory defaults.

Power off the Mac. If the computer is locked and unresponsive hold in the power button until the computer turns off.

Power on the computer.

Press and hold the "Command," "Option," "P" and "R" keys immediately.

Continue to hold the keys until the computer restarts. It is optional but recommended practice to continue holding the keys until the computer restarts for a third time.

Release the held keys.
