Wheat grass actually is a common wheat plant variety that is harvested before it is fully grown, when the wheat is still green and supple. The grass has an earthy taste that packs a great big nutrient wallop. Wheat grass is used in smoothies or as a dietary supplement. Not much room is needed to grow the plant, and wheat grass does not require soil to grow as long as a suitable soil-less mixture is used and the wheat grass is properly taken care of.   • Wheat berries
  • Bowl
  • Tray with holes
  • Drip tray
  • Soil-less medium

Instructions

  1. Without Soil-less Medium

      Soak 2 cups of wheat berries in a bowl of water overnight.

      Rinse the berries with cold water two to three times over a two- to three-day period. Discard any wheat berries that do not sprout.

      Spread the wheat berries in a tray with holes smaller than the berries after three days.

      Set the tray with the holes on top of a bowl filled with water.

      Rinse the berries under cold water over the next 10 days. Harvest after 12 days.

    Soil-less Medium

      Soak the berries as instructed before.

      Spread a soil-less medium over a tray with holes in it.

      Sprinkle the wheat berries over the soil-less medium.

      Cover the tray with another tray with holes in it, inverted, to protect the seeds.

      Water the wheat grass twice a day. Set the tray in a room that is 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Uncover the tray after three to four days or until the plant is 1 to 2 inches tall. Harvest the grass after 12 days.
