How to Soft Mod a Fat PS2

Soft-modding a video game system means you are installing software on the system that will allow you to do things with it that it otherwise could not do. With the original Sony PS2, often referred to as the PS2 Fat because of its thickness, soft-modding it allows you to play your games directly from the PS2's internal hard drive. This improves loading times and will give you quick access to changing games on the fly.

Things You'll Need

  • 3.5 inch IDE hard drive - at least 40GB in size
  • PS2 network adapter
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • HD Loader DVD disk
  • PS2 DVD game

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the power cable from the back of the Fat PS2 and turn the unit around so the back of the PS2 is facing you.

    • 2

Connect the hard drive to the PS2 expansion bay cover, which is also called the PS2 network adapter. Insert the hard drive into the back of the PS2. There is a large opening in the back made for an internal hard drive. The network adapter should face out towards the back of the PS2. Tighten the two screws on the network adapter with the flat-head screwdriver.

    • 3

Insert the power cable back into the PS2 and turn the PS2 on without any disk inside of its DVD drive. When the PS2 main menu comes up, insert the HD Loader disk into the PS2's DVD drive. HD Loader will start running when it is inserted. A new menu will come up on the television screen with the words "Play," "Install," "Remove" and "Rename."

    • 4

Highlight the word "Install" and press the "X" button on the PS2 controller to be brought to the installation menu. Push the "Eject" button on the front of the PS2 drive and remove the HD Loader disk from the DVD drive. Place any PS2 game into the DVD drive and the game will automatically be installed when the drive door is closed.

    • 5

Highlight the word "Play" from the HD Loader menu and press the "X" button to be shown a list with your installed games. The games are stored directly on the PS2's newly installed hard drive. Select the game you just installed and select "Play" again. When the game comes up and you can control it with the PS2 controller, the PS2 has been soft-modded.
